While there has been a lot of focus gender violence during the 16 Days of Activism, one important and often overlooked issue is that of child marriages. According to a report released by UNICEF, an estimated 125 million African girls are child brides. UNICEF has demanded that governments take more aggressive action to end the practice on the continent.
In South Africa, where we have the toughest laws protecting children, child marriage is a big problem, and the rights of minors still go unprotected in a staggering number of cases.
