Yesterday I interviewed Dr Amien Khan, the brother of Nadeem Khan who allegedly died last week whilst in police custody. When I spoke to his brother yesterday he said that Nadeem was trying to sell his own phone when police wrongfully arrested him.
Now at this point it’s difficult to speculate what really happened as the matter is being investigated by The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
What we can take from this is that a wrongful arrest can be problematic. The question is what would be considered legal when you are stopped and searched? We chat to Dr Simon Howell , from the Centre of Criminology University of Cape Town. Dr. Howell has done extensive research with the police and is also involved in research on community policing
