An investigation by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has found that last year’s devastating fires in the Garden Route was most probably caused by strong berg wind conditions, coupled with very dry vegetation. The Knysna fire started on June 7, 2017. Speaking on VOC's Drive Time show with Shafiq Morton, CSIR Researcher Philip Frost said extensive corroborating scientific evidence pointed to the existence and spreading of a smouldering fire that was most likely caused by a lightning strike in the area three months earlier.
