KUSINI WATER – Murendeni Mafumo
If we’re to have any hope of surviving let alone flourishing as a species on this environmentally challenged planet, one of the most important areas that we can do something about is right in the field of what we’re good at – invention, innovation, disruption of old ways, as the popular term has it – doing stuff differently and inspanning our technology to make a difference.
So take WATER, that emotive word and its cluster of ominous challenges.
Many new and not-so-new-ideas have been flighted to address the various crises that face us locally and globally. Solutions to the water crisis, and fixing up the glaring needs that communities and people have for access to water, is high on the agenda. So that’s why I’d like to alert you to this one: it ticks so many boxes of hope. KUSINI WATER is a company that is set to disrupt the water access model, based on innovation, thinking out of the box, technical innovation and social entrepreneurship.
They’re in the process of setting up de-salination plants that are solar-powered and low-pressure, providing access to excellent drinking water for communities that are underserved. The technology is innovative – solar-powered, using filters that are hi-tec nano-fibre, and activated carbon derived from macadamia nut-shells. Yes, you heard right – macadamia nuts, or rather the shells.
