The decision to cast a non-white, non-male, Muslim American character in one of Marvel’s most famous superhero roles is a breath of fresh air in the ever increasing Islamophobic graphic media arena. So says Safiyyah Surtee, a media analyst for Muslimah Media Watch. Many comic fans across the world are eagerly awaiting the publication of the first issue of Marvel Comics’ revamped Ms Marvel title. This time a new character is not so eagerly anticipated because of promises of action but rather the profile of the title character. Marvel has green-lit Golden-age superhero Captain Marvel to be recast as a sixteen year old Muslim Pakistani-American girl.
