As we know, on Friday the family of the martyr Imam Abdullah Haron announced that they would be formally requesting that the NPA reopen the inquest into the death of the imam during police detention. We know that the successful prosecution during the inquest into Ahmed Timols death had set a great precedent and this in turn motivated the Haron family to do the same. Imam Haron died on 27 September 1969 at the hands of the Apartheid police and 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of his death. He died in the same year that six other struggle heroes were killed in detention.
At Friday’s press conference, it was particularly heart breaking to hear the stories of other families such as that of well known TV journalist Lukanyo Calata. Lukanyo’s father Fort Calata and four others, known as the Cradock Four, were killed by apartheid agents in 1985. The South African security police abducted all four activists, killed them and burnt their bodies.
