The South African National Roads agency has suspended the process of pursuing e-toll debt. Motorists who have racked up bills by failing to pay e-tolls in Gauteng are off the hook for past debt. The South African National Roads Agency has decided to no longer pursue the collection of accounts that are in arrears.
The agency says that the move is in response to the initiative led by President Cyril Ramaphosa to address the e-tolls payment impasse. Going forward, Sanral says that the decision will be constantly monitored and reviewed according to prevailing circumstances and the e-toll system will remain in force.
Alishia Seckam from Business Day TV caught up with the company's spokesperson, Vusi Mona, and started off by asking him whether this cripples the e-tolling system in its entirety, here's what he had to say.
Joining her in studio is OUTA’s Rudi Heyneke to discuss SANRAL’s sudden change of heart.
