It is estimated that almost one third of food produced in South Africa for human consumption is effectively thrown away, most of it ending up in landfills where it produces large quantities of the powerful greenhouse gas, methane. In Cape Town, Growthpoint Properties, in partnership with Dutch green technology provider Waste Transformer, has installed an on-site anaerobic digester at its N1 City shopping centre. This effectively uses food waste from the malls’ restaurants and supermarkets to produce electricity, hot water and fertiliser. In this edition of Being Green, Glynis Crook speaks to Gavin Jones, Growthpoint’s Western Cape Retail Asset Manager, about the project.
