
Dr Achmat Davids conferred with a posthumous award

The late Dr Achmat Davids, the doyen of “Cape Malay Studies,” has been conferred with a posthumous Silver National Order of Ikhamanga by President Cyril Ramaphosa. His guardian son Shahim Davids accepted the award on behalf of the Davids family in Pretoria yesterday and it was a wonderful moment to witness.
Dr Davids as we know, was a prominent historian, researcher and author. Many people will recall Dr Achmat Davids as one of the pioneers of the Voice of the Cape radio station and he also served as programme manager.
And of course the Bo Kaap community are immensely proud of this achievement, as Dr Achmat is an icon of the community. One of Dr Achmat’s associates Imam Hassiem Salie chats to us now…
