Muslim religious leaders in South Africa have made an impassioned call on Saudi Arabia to follow the Prophetic tradition of diplaying leniency on three prominent scholars who are being detained and face possible execution. In an open letter to the Saudi Kingdom, the United Ulema Council of South Africa (UUCSA) appealed to the Saudi authorities to withdraw the execution order (if such an order has actually been issued) against Sheikh Salman al-Awdah an internationally known Islamic scholar, Awad al-Qarni a preacher, academic and author and Ali al-Omari a popular broadcaster
They three were arrested in September 2017 during an alleged anti-corruption operation by Saudi Authorities along with dozens of prominent figures and are at the Criminal Special Court in the capital, Riyadh awaiting trial on multiple charges of "terrorism".
