With an agenda packed with issues affecting the Muslim world, the 14th ordinary summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) kicked off in Makkah on Friday. Among the issues are the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, rising anti-Muslim prejudice in different parts of the world, and violent extremism. This year, the summit coincides with two emergency meetings — the Arab League and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summits — called by King Salman amid escalating tensions between Iran on one side and the US and its Gulf allies on the other.
