The current conflict in South Sudan has now boiled down to a contest over public office, pitting the former Vice President, Riek Machar Teny against President,Salva Kiir Mayardit. Whether it was triggered by a coup or not makes for a moot point at this stage. That's according to the Sudd Institute in a detailed report on the background of the conflict currently facing South Sudan. The unfolding unrest in South Sudan, beginning with the events of December 15 2013 in Juba when fighting broke out within the presidential guard and had spread to Greater Upper Nile within two days, may not have been exactly predictable, but it was not entirely surprising.
