Six months after the army deposed Egypt’s first freely elected president, the new authorities are keen to give the impression that the country is back on the path to democracy. A new constitution has been drafted and will be put to a referendum in mid-January. Parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled to follow within the following six months. Egypt’s interim president, Adly Mansour, described the draft constitution as “a good start on which to build the institutions of a democratic and modern state”.
