
Zeenatul Islam masjid breaks its silence on the athaan saga

Now in Ramadan there was a huge conversation in the media and the public around the importance of religious and cultral traditions such as the call to prayer, following one complaint lodged with the City of Cape Town over the sound of the athaan at Zeenatul Islam masjid. An independent online petition in support of the mosque was signed by more than 100 000 people and there were several public statements of support from political figures, even Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Now since then, the masjid hasn’t said much – but it has finally met with the city council over the matter.
