South Africa as we know, has a high number of crime and many argue that our prison system is not working. We are hearing louder calls from ordinary South Africans for the reintroduction of death penalty. But guest speaker today, Father Babychan Arackathara, has a different. He spent 17 years of his prison chaplaincy, visiting both remand and sentenced prisoners. In my hand is his Book, “In Light Through the Bars, understanding and Rethinking South Africa's prisons, where Father Babychan shares stories of offenders and ex-offenders, in the wish to give names, faces and humanity to people we are often trained to fear, hate and shun.
He represents Southern African at the International Commission of Catholic Prison Pastoral care (ICCPPC) an NGO recognised by the UN and a global tarck record of restorative justice and reintegration interventions in our correctional centres, which have brought about healing among offenders, victims and theiur families. He has trained and empowered prison chaplains and restorative justice facilitators across the African continent.
