ABOUT THE POEM SELF SACRIFICE

Ayob wrote this tribute poem to Brenda Fassie in 2005. He decided to write the poem
from the first person perspective of the South African Singing Sensation I an attempt
to give a final voice to the artist. In it he presumes the role of an introspective Fassie
looking at her life on and off stage and societies expectations of her. Fassie likenes
herself to birds in this poem as the writer seeks to highlight her vocal prowess but
also to emphasize the plight of the caged bird, who despite being in captivity still
sings…
