Several people were wounded in gang-related shootings this weekend, including a 16-year-old girl in Manenberg and a six-year-old boy in Mitchells Plain (Beacon Valley). This while a Ukraninan tourist was also robbed and murded by armed men in Houtbay the same day. This is despite the South African National Defence Force being deployed to the “gang-ridden areas on the Cape Flats” last Thursday.
Residents have also expressed great concern over how freely gangsters walk in and out of court and prison. A contributing factor to this, is a lack of sufficient evidence to have them successfully convicted.
Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, has since called on SAPS, law enforcement, SANParks and the SANDF to have an integrated approach to intelligence gathering and sharing- to prevent “crime displacement”.
