India approves triple talaq

India's parliament has approved the bill that makes the Muslim practice of Triple Talaq a criminal offence. A triple talaq allows the husband to divorce the wife by repeating the word “talaq” three times in any form, either text, or by email. The Supreme court declared the practice unconstitutional in 2017. Supporters say the new measure protects women. Opponents say the punishment is harsh and open to misuse. Men found in breach of law can be fined up to three years. So what are the likely consequences of criminalizing “triple talaq”? Or are there any political dynamics to this?
