The recent death of Jesse Hess, Leighandre Jegels, Janika Mallo and Uyinene Mrwetyana bring to light the shocking realities South African women and children face on a daily basis. Being rated as a country with the highest incidents of reported rapes, this is according to The Center for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) revealing statistics from 2017 with an estimated 138 rapes per 100 000 women in 2017.
Now the Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Maite Nkoana-Mashabane reacted to the alarming murders after news about the death of the well-known female boxer Leighandre Jegels was made public. This begs the questions of whether its is time for government to declare violence perpetrated against women as a national crisis.
