President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa’s lockdown was aimed at delaying the spread of the coronavirus. This has given us time to prepare the health services and mobilise some of the supplies needed to treat those affected, among other things. Ramaphosa says there is clear evidence that the lockdown is working. It has slowed down the progression of the pandemic.
However, the President says the lockdown cannot be sustained indefinitely. Beyond Thursday 30th April we will begin a gradual and phased recovery of the SA economy. Ramaphosa says the action we take must be measured and incremental. “We must avoid a rushed reopening that could risk a spread that would require another hard lockdown as we have seen in other countries.” The President says though we will be moving from Level 5 – where we currently are, to Level 4. There are five levels, Level One being the least restrictive. Listen to the full details from tonight’s address here.
