The Western Cape was the only province which sent learners to class on Monday – but their defiance of the government’s last-minute change to the ‘back to school’ rules could be punished via the courts, after the SA Human Rights Commission filed a case against the regional Education Department. Angie Motshekga and her ministry confirmed late on Sunday that students would only be expected back on Monday 8 June. The adjustment, however, was made less than 12 hours before many schools were planning to reopen their gates, leaving a large number of South Africans in the lurch.
