Will Chiefs’ Transfer Targets Wait? The Carwash Crew Debates.
Back in February, Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs were banned for two transfer window periods as punishment for their allegedly unlawful signing of Madagascar international Andriamirado "Dax" Andrianarimanana in 2018. The ruling means that Amakhosi are unable to sign new players until June 2021. While Chiefs planned to appeal the ruling, this process was delayed by the global coronavirus pandemic, and the new date for their appeal proceedings is set for after the current transfer window in September.
If this ruling stands, any current Chiefs targets would have to wait until September for Amakhosi to make their appeal, which would potentially allow them to sign in January 2021. In the latest episode of The Carwash, former Orlando Pirates star Teko Modise debates whether players would be willing to wait that long for the opportunity. “Of course it’s a big risk for players, but it’s also an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime. But I think those who will benefit with this are the ones with their own clearances in hand waiting for Kaizer Chiefs”, he stated on SL Radio.
Former Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper Sean Roberts added “If [the ban] does get lifted, and I have a sneaky suspicion it will, and the players are still in demand then they’re cashing in you know? But it’s a massive risk, what do you do? Do you say no to another club just on the hope that a ban doesn’t get lifted? It’s a tough one, I wouldn’t like to be in their shoes”.
