In Being Green this week, Glynis Crook speaks to Dr Niall McCann, founder and conservation director of the UK-based conservation charity, National Park Rescue, to get an update on the unprecedented death of some 400 elephants in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. No-one knows why they are dying, but the country’s government said samples taken from the dead animals were to be analysed by laboratories here in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Canada. Botswana is home to the largest elephant herd in Africa. Across the continent, there are only an estimated 415 thousand of the animals left and they are classified by the IUCN as vulnerable.
