Will Middendorp Show Faith in Baccus?

Kaizer Chiefs’ coach Ernst Middendorp will have a tough task on his hands when it comes to selecting his starting midfielders, particularly since George Maluleka has left Amakhosi for Mamelodi Sundowns. ‘Mido’ signed a pre-contract with Masandawana in March, days before Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Irvin Khoza confirmed the suspension of football. In late June, Kaizer Chiefs announced that they would not be extended the 31-Year-Old midfielder’s contract for the remainder of the season. ‘Mido’ was a mainstay in Chiefs central midfield, meaning his departure raises questions as to whether Middendorp will deploy Kearyn Baccus to fill the void.
Speaking on SL Radio’s The Carwash podcast, PSL legend Teko Modise argued: “I think it would suicidal for the coach not [to] use Baccus because of the qualities that he has. Plus, he’s been playing [regularly] so to bring back Nthangase would be so much pressure for the boy to perform, and these are the games where you need people who are ready to perform and do it for the team.”
Former Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper Sean Roberts added, “I believe he’s going to be the replacement, to be honest. He’s able to go forward, he does very well defensively, he’s impressed me massively in the games that he’s played. The key is to have Katsande there, and whoever’s gonna play next to him and I do believe it will be Baccus.”
