Who would have thought that a novel idea 25 years ago would give birth to a radio station that became an icon in the Cape Town community? You know the names, you know the famous adverts and you know our famous phrases, VOC has without a doubt become an institution in the Cape Muslim community.
We’ve brought the athaan into your home, countless khatams, too many Eid moon-sightings and of course, just good old conversation on air – with plenty of laughs and tears over the years.
Today we celebrate our birthday, but we also celebrate you the listener! We pay tribute to our staff of the past, those still with us, those who’ve moved on and those who have passed on.
So listeners are in for a treat this morning. We are going to bring in some old, very old voices. Before we do that…lets chat to someone who is possibly the most famous voice on VOC, Boeta Yusuf Fisher. Also remember this famous voice and former VOC technician, Vernon Adams. Vernon has worked in all aspects of media and he had his own radio show in the commercial sector as well. He is currently chief marketing officer at African News Agency. We now want to connect with someone who made the seamless jump from radio to acting. A man we see on our TV screens every day, cos he’s in so many adverts – Mr Mehboob Bawa and lets not forget Media Mafia's Saawmiet Moos
