
Proposed overhaul of broadcast regulations gets tongues wagging

If you're addicted to Netflix, you may have to pay a TV licence to get your daily fix. The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, recently published a white paper which proposed a complete overhaul of the regulations that govern the country’s broadcasting industry. Among them are alternative revenue streams for the SABC. The public broadcaster says regulation is needed which would require pay-TV service providers like MultiChoice (DStv) and video on demand providers like Netflix to collect TV licences on behalf of the SABC. Under this new proposal, those who consume media on tablets, laptops and phones will also be charged by SABC.
