By 1997, South Africa already had the largest HIV epidemic in the world. On the eve of the launch in October 1998, Khayelitsha had the highest HIV prevalence in the world and the national government made its announcement that health services would not provide AZT to pregnant women.
On line is Director, office of AIDS and TB Research at South African Medical Research Council, Dr Fareed Abdullah.
