Should we cancel year-end functions and just take the cash?

Since most of us won't be able to get together with our colleagues at the end of the year, it made us rethink the whole point of this seemingly unnecessary party? Couldn't the money spent on refreshments, decorations, drinks, etc. rather be spent on salaries? Considering the year some people have had, it might benefit them a lot more.
