Artist LEBOGANG ‘MOGUL’ MABUSELA Talks To Unathi about The Bag Factory presents the Monotypebabe Curatorial, a curatorial scheme aimed at exploring an inventive print studio model with a particular focus on producing monotype prints, which has now culminated into a group exhibition: Monotypes… A Monotypebabe Experience. During her three-month residency at the Bag Factory as runner-up recipient of the annual Young Womxn Studio Bursary, Lebogang ‘Mogul’ Mabusela invited local artists to collaborate with her on a printer x artist relationship. Although according to popular tastes bigger seems to be better, in this case the catch was to work smaller, as the Monotypebabe Curatorial printing press only prints smaller than A4. There are many print studios locally which mostly operate on a bigger size printing press, so that has been done before. Mabusela is more interested in something unique, for cleverness or ingenuity. As a monotypebabe with a dream, being a printmaker for her means expressing her creativity through others, while being a mediator between the artist and the specialized printing technique of monotypes. The experimental results of her collaboration with 17 artists are showcased in the exhibition. Through each artist’s creativity and powerful imagination she interrogates and investigates the challenges of working small, through ongoing collectivism, creative challenges, and experimentation.
