SA’s 2021 local government elections have got off to a fair start, with more than 99% of the 23,148 voting stations opening on time and getting under way with the voting process as planned.
Unfortunately, in a briefing given by the Electoral Commission of SA's (IEC's) chairperson Glen Mashinini halfway through voting day, the commission highlighted a few cases of electoral tampering and malfeasance which it said were being dealt with by the authorities.
IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo says they are aware of all the cases raised by Mashinini and that they are being addressed. He added that the IEC and authorities are looking sternly upon cases of electoral tampering and that those found guilty face a jail term of up to five years.
