ConCourt rules that independent candidates need 1,000 signatures to contest elections

The Constitutional Court has ruled on Monday that independent candidates will need 1,000 signatures to partake in an election. The apex court gave a judgment on an application brought forward by One South Africa, challenging the number of signatures required to contest an election. According to the Electoral Amendment Act signed into law in 2023 after a ConCourt ruling of 2020 that independent candidates can contest elections, independents and political parties must garner 15% of the votes required to obtain a seat for the region they are contesting.Delivering two judgments by ConCourt, justice Jody Kollapen said chief justice Raymond Zondo's judgement.
