Sunday Revolution Spotlight - Matthew Charles with a 1st Time Radio Play of "Disclaimers"

Matthew was in the studio for a great chat about his current single "Te Amo", and his upcoming track "Disclaimers"
Listen to both tracks in this podcast.
After a two-year break from releasing music, South African singer-songwriter Matthew Charles returns with a bold new direction on his latest single, Te Amo. “I’ve always thought saying ‘I love you’ in Spanish sounds more meaningful and sexy,” says Matthew. “It also rolls off the tongue and makes for a really catchy chorus. I wanted to create something fun, but still emotionally charged — something people could feel and sing along to.”
"Te Amo" began as a simple chorus in producer Helena Bowie's bedroom and evolved into a full-blown pop anthem. The talented trio of Helena Bowie, Matthew May, and Sophia Joelle (who penned the clever lyrics) recorded and produced the track from scratch. “We wanted it to sound big—almost anthem-like but still intimate and personal,” he explains. “The first version that came back from Matthew May was exactly what I’d imagined in my head.”
While Te Amo marks a new chapter, it’s not Matthew’s first success. His debut single Home achieved radio success across the country, all while he was finishing his degree. With that now complete, Matthew is entirely focused on music and has committed to releasing a new track every three weeks as part of his upcoming debut EP, What’s on Your Mind. “Te amo is just the start. I have a few collaborations in the works with local artist, Naomi Grace and Colombian artist, JHOAN.” Fans can expect two more EPs to be released in 2026.
Born and raised in Johannesburg, music has always been in Matthew’s blood. “My mom taught me to play ‘Chopsticks’ on a piano my grandmother gave us before I even started school,” he says. “Since then, music has been my therapy. Whether I make a career out of it or not, it’s something I’ll always do.” Influenced by a range of artists, including One Direction, Shawn Mendes, and Ed Sheeran, as well as more recent inspirations like Noah Kahan and Gracie Abrams, Matthew is carving out his own sound — pop at its core, but never limited to one genre. “I just want to make great music and play incredible shows,” says Matthew.
