John Calvin: Setting the Stage for a Young Reformer in Exile
In this first session of our new series on John Calvin presented by Pastor Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church, we step back into 16th-century France to trace the early life of one of the most influential—yet often misunderstood—figures of the Reformation. Born in Noyon in 1509, Calvin rose from a middle-class background to become a brilliant scholar shaped by the humanist cry of ad fontes—back to the sources—and the sparks of Martin Luther’s Reformation. His “sudden conversion” marked a turning point that transformed his pursuit of law and philosophy into a lifelong devotion to God’s Word. Yet, faith quickly brought persecution, forcing Calvin into exile as a young man, much like the exiles of old who learned to seek the Lord’s strength in turbulent times. Along the way, we’ll consider not only the providence of God in raising up such leaders but also the reminder that our hope is never in men—even great reformers—but in Christ alone. Join me as we set the stage for Calvin’s Institutes and see God’s hand guiding history for His glory. #MemorableMonday #ChurchHistory #JohnCalvin #Reformation #BibleTruth #GodsProvidence #FaithInExile #HistoryOfTheChurch
