Botswana has reignited regional tensions by reinstating a sweeping ban on vegetable imports and South Africa is feeling the impact. The ban, which took effect without warning, blocks more than 16 everyday vegetables from crossing into Botswana, from tomatoes and potatoes to peppers, cabbage, onions and even watermelon.

We unpack what this sudden decision means for South African farmers, exporters and the broader regional economy. South Africa exports roughly R4 billion worth of vegetables each year, and Botswana alone accounts for 8% of that market making this more than just a minor diplomatic hiccup.
