The Legacy of Trent: Authority, Tradition, and the Battle for Scripture
History is never neutral. In this Memorable Monday episode with Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church, we examine the enduring legacy of the Council of Trent (1545–1563) and how its decisions shaped theology, global missions, worship, politics, and culture right up to the present day. Using 2 Timothy 3:16–17 as our anchor, we explore how Rome’s response to the Reformation elevated tradition alongside Scripture, standardised belief and practice, and exported a sacramental gospel across the world. Yet the lesson of Trent is not merely historical. Scripture repeatedly warns that the church—Protestant or Catholic—must test all things by the Word of God (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). This episode calls believers to recognise the ongoing danger of replacing biblical authority with tradition, teachers, or pragmatism, and to rest afresh in Christ’s promise that He alone builds His church (Matthew 16:18). True Reformation is not abandoning Rome—it is continually returning to the supreme, sufficient, and final authority of Scripture. #MemorableMonday, #CouncilOfTrent, #ChurchHistory, #SolaScriptura, #BiblicalAuthority, #Reformation, #ChristianPodcast, #TestingAllThings, #ChristBuildsHisChurch
