: Luke 2 and Acts 1: Understanding Second Temple Judaism
Understanding the New Testament requires understanding the world into which Jesus Christ came. In this Technical Thursday episode with Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible church, we explore the historical and theological setting of Second Temple Judaism—the world that shaped the Gospels and the book of Acts. From the central role of the temple in Jerusalem to the spread of synagogues throughout the Jewish diaspora, God was preparing the stage for the arrival of His Son and the proclamation of the gospel.
We examine the significance of the temple as the center of worship and sacrifice (Luke | 2:22–38; John | 2:13–22), the synagogue as a place of Scripture reading and teaching (Luke | 4:16–21; Acts | 13:14–16), and the dispersion of Jewish communities across the Roman world (Acts | 2:5–11). We also consider the influence of Greek language and culture, the providential role of Roman rule (Luke | 2:1–2; Acts | 1:6), and the growing messianic expectation that filled the air of first-century Israel (Luke | 3:15; John | 1:41).
This episode provides an essential map for understanding the New Testament, revealing how God sovereignly prepared the religious, cultural, political, and linguistic environment for the coming of Christ. Join us as we discover how the world of Second Temple Judaism points us to the promised Messiah and the unfolding plan of redemption.
