Andropause – Understanding Male Hormonal Changes, Testosterone, and Estrogen Balance

In this episode of the Get Up and Go Breakfast program on Radio Cape Pulpit, host Anton Brink speaks with Dr. Wendy Christine from Integrated Health Solution about andropause – the male equivalent of menopause, often referred to as "male menopause."

Dr. Christine explains the key difference between menopause and andropause:

Menopause in women involves a rapid decline in ovarian function and hormone production, ending in the cessation of the menstrual cycle.

Andropause in men involves a gradual decline in testosterone, often beginning in the mid-40s, but not every man develops symptoms.

She emphasizes that testosterone plays a vital role beyond sexual function – it influences muscle mass, strength, bone health, red blood cell production, mood, motivation, energy, and overall well-being. As testosterone declines, men may notice:

Reduced energy

Loss of muscle mass

Increased abdominal fat

Changes in sexual function

Mood swings, sleep disturbances, and difficulty concentrating

However, she warns that other factors can cause similar symptoms – including stress, poor sleep, excess alcohol, lack of exercise, and certain medications. She encourages men to look at the whole person, not just assume it's low testosterone.

She also surprises many listeners by explaining that men need estrogen too. An enzyme called aromatase converts some testosterone into estradiol (the main form of estrogen), which is important for bone health, sexual function, brain health, and metabolism. However, excess body fat increases aromatase activity, leading to more testosterone being converted to estrogen – which can throw off the balance.

Her key message: Hormones don't work in isolation. Testosterone, estrogen, insulin, cortisol, and thyroid hormones are all interconnected. Men should discuss symptoms with a healthcare professional, get proper blood tests, and consider lifestyle factors (nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress management) before jumping to hormone therapy.
