DA Gauteng leader resigns citing lack of faith in leadership

DA Gauteng leader John Moodey has resigned from the party, saying he has no faith in its current leadership.

His announcement on Wednesday morning comes mere days ahead of the party’s first ever policy conference, set to be held over the weekend, which will have to determine the direction the party takes in terms of, among other things, race and redress.

Moodey, who was member of the party for 22 years, and its Gauteng leader for 15, was one of three candidates who had put his name in the hat to run for the leadership position at the DA’s national congress late in October.

He was set to contest interim leader John Steenhuisen and KwaZulu-Natal MPL Mbali Ntuli.

His resignation comes on the back of the resignations of former party leader Mmusi Maimane last year, as well as former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba, who both cited unhappiness with the direction the DA had taken on several issues, including race.

Provincial chair Mike Moriarty and DA national spokesperson Refiloe Nt’sekhe said Moodey’s resignation was both “unfortunate and unnecessary”.

“The DA believes that he is making a mistake because the DA is the only party that can unseat the ANC and deliver a fair, effective and accountable government,” Moriarty and Nt’sekhe said.
